Job description

CRAG is an independent research institution engaged in leading-edge basic and applied plant and farm animal sciences. CRAG is established as a Consortium of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA), Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and University of Barcelona (UB). The Center is located at the UAB Campus, and currently hosts 200 members from across the world.

Research Programs at CRAG (from basic science to applied research using plant experimental model systems, crops, and farm animals) make extensive use of genomic technologies and large sets of genetic and genomic data (https://www.cragenomica.es).

Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Cluster Systems Engineer to join CRAG. As a Cluster Systems Engineer, your primary mission is to analyze and optimize the current state of our computing cluster. You will work closely with the IT department and scientific leaders in the Bioinformatics Service to define the ideal cluster structure aligned with the present and future needs of CRAG.

His/her main responsibilities will include:

  • Cluster Analysis and Optimization: Evaluate the current state of the computing cluster. Identify critical areas and limitations affecting optimal performance. Propose and implement improvements to enhance cluster efficiency and responsiveness.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate closely with the IT department and scientific leaders in the Bioinformatics Service. Understand present and future CRAG needs in terms of computing and bioinformatics.
  • Action Plan Development: Develop a comprehensive action plan for the evolution of the cluster infrastructure. Identify and schedule the replacement of essential equipment and programs based on needs and strategic planning.
  • Participation in Acquisition Calls: Actively participate in submitting requests for acquisition related to cluster infrastructure. Collaborate in evaluating new technologies and solutions to enhance cluster capacity and efficiency.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in cluster administration and optimization.
  • Knowledge of IT systems, bioinformatics, and relevant technologies.
  • Experience in planning and implementing infrastructure upgrades.
  • Specialized knowledge in High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in distributed storage systems, including Lustre.
  • Proficient in job queue management (SLURM).
  • Capability to generate cluster usage reports.
  • Broad understanding of bioinformatics.
  • Familiarity with the non-profit sector will be an asset.

Working conditions:

  • Temporal position, 6 months.
  • Working day: Full 37.5 hours/week.
  • Remuneration: depending on the experience and qualifications provided and framed within the salary structure of CRAG.
  • Planned date of incorporation: June 2024
  • Facilities for balance work and personal life through teleworking and flexible working hours, 22 days of holidays, 9 free days of personal matters; intensive working hours on summer and Fridays.
