Job description

ABOUT CRAG:

CRAG is an independent research institution engaged in leading-edge basic and applied plant and farm animal sciences. CRAG is established as a Consortium of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Institute of Agrifood Research and Technology (IRTA), Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and University of Barcelona (UB). The Center is located at the UAB Campus, and currently hosts 200 members from across the world.

Research Programs at CRAG (from basic science to applied research using plant experimental model systems, crops and farm animals) make extensive use of genomic technologies and large sets of genetic and genomic data (http://biennialreport2018-2019.cragenomica.es/).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) is looking for a Postdoc Researcher to be part of the group of David Caparrós-Ruiz

The candidate will be in charge of:

Characterization of a specific metabolic route and analysis-based prediction of the modification necessary to enable and maximize the production of a metabolite of biotechnological interest.

The integration and analysis of –omic data, mainly NGS transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics. Thus, candidate must be familiarized with the treatment of NGS data and will be able to implement and use new computational pipelines for pre-processing and quality control assessment of data. In addition, as the main interest of this project is related to phenolic compounds, a previous knowledge on these compounds will be of interest.

In addition, the candidate will be involved in the identification of new pathways that could be involved in the production of the metabolite of interest. Thus, the candidate must be familiar with computational systems biology approaches such as network modelling or gene co-expression networks. An interest in metabolic pathway modelling techniques such as Flux Balance Analysis is desirable. The candidate must be able implement reusable and well-documented workflows.

The tasks are included within the framework of the project “GESTION FORESTAL DE LOS ALCORNOCALES Y SU INFLUENCIA EN LA MEJORA DE LAS PROPIEDADES DEL CORCHO, EN SU PROCESADO, CALIDAD E INTERACCION CON EL VINO”

REQUIREMENTS:

Educational requirements:

A mixed wet-lab and computational background. Plant biology, Molecular biology, Biotechnology or similar with a strong background in quantitative biology and biostatitcs or theoretical backgrounds such as bioinformatics, physics, statistics or mathematics applied to biological questions.

Skills and Experience: candidate must be familiarized with management of –omic data (RNAseq and quantitative proteomics) and with computational analyses. Biostatistical knowledge applied to experimental design. User knowledge of high performance computing environments to use CRAG’s computer cluster in the analysis of large datasets. Scripting languages such as R and bioconductor and/or Python, as well as pathway and omics programming packages. An interest in data visualization is desirable. Knowledge of existing databases and integration of publicly available and own experimental data, ideally including LC-MS data. Basic concepts of metabolic data analysis. Availability of open source tools for omic data analysis. Candidates with experience on phenylpropanoids metabolites are strongly encouraged to apply.
